What is Happiness?
In one sentence, happiness is the state of mind in which absence of the sorrow is realized. Or, if there is no more sorrow that is the state of happiness. That is why to remain in the state of happiness or to realize the state of happiness one should know that from where the sorrow comes. It is common practice from the time immemorial to nowadays that people try to understand the happiness relating with comfort and sorrow relating with discomfort. But this practice is 100 percent incorrect to understand what is the happiness and sorrow. We must understand difference between comfort and happiness; and discomfort and sorrow.
It is true that when we become happy comfort prevails on our body and when we become sorrowful discomfort prevails on our body. From this fact it becomes obvious that prevailing comfort and discomfort on our body is related to the happiness and the sorrow. But it would be 100 percent incorrect to conclude that happiness is related to the comfort and sorrow is related to the discomfort. The comfort and discomfort is not in itself the happiness and the sorrow.
We must know that there are two kinds of comfort and discomfort. One type of comfort and discomfort is manifestation of the happiness and sorrow; and other type of comfort and discomfort come from the use of outer means, that is various kinds of means of amenities. If various kinds of means of amenities are available for our use comfort comes from that and if means of amenities are not available to us we face discomfort. This is the relation one between comfort and availability of means of amenities and discomfort and unavailability of means of amenities. But there is also another kind of relation between these two. That is comfort prevails if we use rationally the available means of amenities and discomfort prevails if we use irrationally the available means of amenities. Hence discomfort is inevitable when means of amenities are not available and when we use available means of amenities irrationally. But availability of means of amenities can't generate comfort inevitably; use of amenities must be rational to generate comfort.
As in the case of availability of means of amenities can't generate comfort inevitably; availability of means of amenities can't generate happiness automatically. Same is true in relation between sorrow and unavailability of means of amenities; that is, unavailability of means of amenities doesn't generate sorrow automatically. The fact is that if we use the means of amenities rationally the happiness inherent with us remains intact and if we use means of amenities irrationally we should face not only discomfort but also sorrow. That is, sorrow comes from irrationality and happiness remains with rationality. That is, happiness is eternal and truth; but sorrow is temporary and false. Sorrow exists with irrationality only; there is no objective existence of sorrow. When we come out of irrationality we would be embraced in the eternal truth, the happiness. Happiness is our real existence, the objective reality and the eternal truth.
